Risk Management Policy
Synopsis: One of the biggest topics outside of loan portfolio review this
year has been risk management and corporate governance. As a result of the economic
and regulatory environment, senior executives and board members have seen increased
pressure to ensure safe and sound banking operations and reduce their exposure to
risk. Easier said than done right? A great place to start is by evaluating your
institution’s risk management policy. Your policy should be reviewed to reflect
changes to risk limits and ensure the policies objectives are being met. If you
have not reviewed your risk management policy recently, it’s time to do so before
your next regulatory visit. To help you prepare for your review, it’s important
to ensure your policy contains the following 9 key elements that regulators will
be looking for during your review.
• Purpose Statement
• Objectives
• General Strategy
• Authority
• Responsibility
• Organizational Structure
• Risk Limits
• Policy Exception
• Document Control
